Hanna Takes Over in Set Five to Lead Bearcats to Victory.
MARYVILLE, Mo. -The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team brought an offensive explosion to Bearcat Arena on Saturday night as they defeated Missouri Southern 3-2. The Bearcats won set one 25-20, fell in set number two 25-27 despite hitting .400, then split the next two sets, winning 25-18 and losing 19-25. In the fifth and final set Alex Hanna exploded with six kills, including four straight points, and five of six points, to help the Bearcats win in five, 15-8.
Kelsey Larson led four Bearcats in double-digit kills with 16. Larson also added three block assists. Hanna had 15 kills, while Ashley Mitchell and Sara Falcone added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Amber Ryan chipped in with nine kills in the victory. Laira Akin led Northwest with 48 assists, she also added eight digs, three block assists and a service ace. Falcone recorded her second double-double in the last three matches as she added 11 digs. Falcone also led the team with six block assists. Mitchell had two solo and two assisted blocks in the win. Libero Paige Spangenberg led the Bearcat defensive receiving with 17 digs. Spangenberg also recorded three assists and an ace.
Northwest hit .295 as a team in the match, while Missouri Southern hit .241. Southern also had seven more attacking errors than the Bearcats, and three more service errors. The victory gave the Bearcats their first conference victory at home this season and also gave interim head coach Allison Rogers the first victory of her career.
Northwest (11-15, 2-8 MIAA) will start their second round through MIAA play on Tuesday as they travel to Topeka, Kan., to face No. 7 Washburn at 7 p.m.
