Akin Has Career Night in Loss to Missouri Western
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Sara Falcone had a double-double and hit .467, and Kelsey Larson had 13 kills, but it was not enough as Northwest Missouri State fell to Missouri Western in five-sets 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-25 and 12-15.
Falcone led the Bearcats with 14 kills in the match and also had a career-high 18 digs, along with four block assists. Amber Ryan chipped in with 10 kills of her own and also added eight total blocks. Laira Akin tied a career-high with 50 assists in the match to go along with two kills, three block assists, and a career-best 15 digs. Libero Paige Spangenberg had 29 digs to lead the Bearcats in the loss.
Alex Hanna added nine kills in the match with two block assists, while Ashley Mitchell had seven kills to go along with her six blocks. Northwest out-hit Missouri Western .205 to .197 and had eight less attack errors in the match. However, Missouri Western recorded six service aces to Northwest's one.
Missouri Western had two players, Kelli Sicner and Meghan Voelz with 22 kills each.
Northwest (10-14, 1-7 MIAA) will travel to Kirksville, Mo., on Friday to face No. 20 Truman at 7 p.m. The Bearcats will finish up the week at home against Missouri Southern on Saturday in Bearcat Arena. Match is set to start at 5 p.m.
