Bearcats Fall in Both Matches of Day 2 at Washburn
Topeka, Kan. -Day two of the Washburn Invitational was a struggle for the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team. The Bearcats dropped a pair of games on the second day of the tournament in Topeka, Kan.
Northwest opened up the day with a 5-set loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Bearcats went down 20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 22-25 and 8-15. Alex Hanna led the strong offensive attack for the Bearcats with 13 kills, while Falcone, Mitchell and Ryan each had 11 kills apiece. Laira Akin had a strong game from her setter position. The sophomore recorded 45 assists in the loss. Paige Spangenberg continued her strong tournament to lead the Bearcats with 27 digs in the match, while Alicia Watson and Ryan each had 10 digs.
The Savage Storm out-hit Northwest in the match .224 to .206 and also had two less attacking kills. Southeastern was led in the match by Azuara Lunden with 19 kills.
Northwest finished out the tournament losing to No. 6 West Texas A&M in three sets, 14-25, 20-25 and 21-25. While the Bearcats had seven fewer attacking errors than West Texas, Northwest struggled to find an offensive groove hitting only .096 in the loss. Falcone led the Bearcats with seven kills. Hanna, Mitchell and Ryan each chipped in with six. Akin once again led Northwest while recording 23 assists, Akin also had a solo block and four block assists. Ryan and Mitchell had six and five block assists respectively, as Northwest out-blocked A&M as a team 11 to four.
For the tournament Northwest (10-11) split in their four matches. Akin led Northwest with 188 assists in the tournament while playing just over three matches. Falcone and Ryan led the Bearcats with 45 and 39 kills respectively in the tournament.
The Bearcats will next host Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 7 in Bearcat Arena, the match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
