Maryville, Mo. -The Bearcat volleyball team travels to Topeka, Kan., this weekend for the Washburn Invitational. Action begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. for Northwest Missouri State as they will take on Tarleton State. Northwest will later face Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. On Saturday the Bearcats will play Southeastern Oklahoma State at 9 a.m. and will finish off the day and the tournament with No. 6 West Texas A&M at 3 p.m.
The Bearcats (8-9, 1-4 MIAA) are coming off of consecutive conference losses at home last weekend against Pittsburg State and Southwest Baptist. Northwest has never faced West Texas A&M before and are a combined 4-0 against their other three opponents this weekend.
Northwest last played Southwestern Oklahoma in Sept. of 2007. The Bearcats won the match in straight sets. Junior Sara Falcone had nine kills as a freshman for the Bearcats, while Paige Spangenberg, who was also a freshman, led the squad with 18 digs in the match. Falcone currently leads the Bearcats with 162 kills, a .299 hitting percentage, 58 total blocks and 22 service aces. Spangenberg leads this year's squad with 300 digs.
The Bearcats have not faced Southeastern Oklahoma since Oct. of 2002, and have not met Tarleton since 1995.
West Texas A&M will be the fifth different squad ranked in the AVCA top-25 poll that Northwest will face this year, and it's the second team outside of the MIAA.
