Northwest Loses Battle of the Bearcats, 1-3
Maryville, Mo. -The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team dropped to 1-4 in the MIAA Saturday night in Bearcat Arena, losing to Southwest Baptist 3-1. Northwest came out firing in the first set hitting .370 and taking the set 25-18. However Southwest Baptist would sweep the final three sets 23-25, 14-25 and 17-25.
The Bearcats were led offensively by Amber Ryan's 12 kills, while Sara Falcone added 11. Both Ryan and Falcone added five block assists as well, and Laira Akin and Alex Hanna chipped in with four. Akin also had two kills, six digs and 27 assists in the match before leaving with an injury. Monica Roof came in and replaced Akin and recorded a career-high seven assists. Paige Spangenberg led Northwest with 16 digs. Ashley Mitchell had six kills and two solo blocks for the Bearcats.
Ashley Jurgensmeyer led Southwest Baptist with 19 kills in the match. Southwest also out-hit Northwest .267 to .168. The Bearcats out-blocked their opponent once again, recording 14 blocks to Southwest's six.
Northwest (8-9, 1-4 MIAA) will head to Topeka, Kan., next weekend for the Washburn Invitational. The Bearcats will face Tarleton State and Southwestern Oklahoma on Friday, and will play Southeastern Oklahoma State and West Texas A&M on Saturday to finish up the tounrament.
