Bearcats Fall in Three to No. 21 Pittsburg State
Maryville, Mo. -Friday night brought another tough opponent to Bearcat Arena as Northwest Missouri State was defeated 3-0 by No. 21 Pittsburg State by scores of 18-25, 22-25 and 24-26.
Northwest was down throughout the match but fought to the very end. In the third set the Bearcats faced match point at 24-16, before scoring eight unanswered points to tie the set. The Gorillas however put away the final two points to secure the victory.
Ashley Mitchell led the Bearcats with 12 kills while hitting .458 and adding a block. Sara Falcone added 9 kills to go along with her .444 hitting percentage and block assist. Setter Laira Akin led Northwest in the match with 33 assists, she also recorded 11 digs and three block assists. Paige Spangenberg had 25 digs and an ace for the Bearcats in the loss.
The Gorillas were led by Pamela Cartagena's 13 kills and 12 digs. Pittsburg State out-hit the Bearcats .230 to .167 in the match, and also had 10 service aces to Northwest's six.
Northwest falls to 8-8 on the season and 1-3 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will have to shake-off the loss quickly however as they host Southwest Baptist (5-10) tomorrow night at 5 in Bearcat Arena.
