Bearcats to Face Pittsburg State and Southwest Baptist at Home
Maryville, Mo. -The Bearcat volleyball team (8-7, 1-2 MIAA) is hosting a pair of matches this weekend at Bearcat Arena. Northwest Missouri State will host No. 21 Pittsburg State (11-4, 3-1 MIAA) at 7 p.m. on Friday, and will finish the weekend Saturday at 5 p.m. against Southwest Baptist (5-10, 0-3 MIAA).
Pittsburg State is one of six MIAA teams ranked in the AVCA top-25 poll. The Bearcats have not defeated the Gorillas since Sept. of 2004. When it comes to Southwest Baptist, it's just the opposite. Northwest has not lost to the purple bearcats since 2002. Head Coach Anna Tool is 6-0 all-time against Southwest Baptist.
The Bearcats are coming off of a 3-1 loss at the hands of defending MIAA champion and third-ranked Emporia State last Saturday. In that match junior outside hitter Sara Falcone recorded a season-best 18 kills. Ashley Mitchell had a career-high 13 kills at Fort Hays State the night before. Falcone (142) and Mitchell (126) are first and third respectively in kills for the Bearcats, while Alex Hanna is second on the squad with 133 kills. Sophomore setter Laira Akin comes into this weekend's action averaging 9.91 assists per set.
Northwest is also much-improved this season around the net, as they are currently out-blocking their opponents 103.5 to 68. This takes much of the pressure off junior libero Paige Spangenberg who is averaging 4.8 digs per set this season. Spangenberg has averaged 5.09 digs per set in her two seasons prior.
Pittsburg State is led by their senior outside hitter Pamela Cartagena, who leads the team with 240 kills, and setter Emily Vosseler who averages 10.88 assists per set. Southwest Baptist is led by a three-pronged attack as Kelsey Stewart and Alex Smith lead the team with 154 and 152 kills respectively, while Ashley Jurgensmeyer has 147.
