Northwest Gets on Winning Track in the MIAA
Maryville, Mo. -The Bearcat volleyball team rebounded from Wednesday night's tough loss to No. 6 Washburn to defeat Fort Hays State this evening in a five-set thriller in Hays, Kan.
Northwest Missouri State dropped the first game 20-25, and then took the next two 25-15 and 25-20. The tigers rebounded in an exciting fourth set winning 26-24. Northwest would win the fifth and decisive-set 16-14.
Ashley Mitchell led three Bearcats in double-digit kills with 13. Mitchell would also add a solo block and two block assists in the match. Northwest's leading attackers Alex Hanna and Sara Falcone added 12 and 10 kills respectively for the Bearcats, Falcone also chipped in with 17 digs and five block assists.
Laira Akin led the Bearcats with 44 assists against Fort Hays. Akin also added three kills, five digs, four block assists and an ace in the match. Junior libero Paige Spangenberg led Northwest with 24 digs against the tigers.
The Bearcats hit .199 as a team while holding Fort Hays to .110. The tigers also committed 38 attacking errors and 13 service errors in the match. Northwest would out-block the tigers in the match nine to three.
Northwest (8-6, 1-1 MIAA) travels to Emporia, Kan., tomorrow to face No. 3 Emporia State in a 4 p.m. match with the Hornets.
