Bearcats Drop MIAA Opener to #6 Washburn
Maryville, Mo. -The MIAA conference opener was a tough one for the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team. The Bearcats dropped a 3-0 match against No. 6 Washburn on Wednesday night in Bearcat Arena by scores of 21-25, 18-25 and 21-25.
The Bearcats struggled with their serving game for most of the match recording eight service errors with no aces. Ashley Mitchell led the Bearcat attack with 12 kills in the match. Sara Falcone, Alex Hanna and Amber Ryan all chipped in with six kills. Falcone, Mitchell and Ryan also added two block assists each in the match. As a team the Bearcats would hit .160, while Washburn hit .288.
Setter Laira Akin once again led Northwest with 30 assists on the evening, while also adding two kills and two block assists of her own. Paige Spangenberg led the Bearcats with 15 digs and also had two assists.
Breanna Lewis led the Lady Blues with 12 kills while setter Kate Hampson had 38 assists.
Northwest (7-6, 0-1 in the MIAA) will travel to Hays, Kan., on Friday to face Fort Hays State in a 7 p.m. match before traveling on Saturday to play No. 3 Emporia State.
