Bearcats Split Two Matches on Day 1 of Wisconsin-Parkside Tourney

Kenosha, Wis. - The Bearcat volleyball team split two matches on the opening day of the Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament in Kenosha, Wis.

Northwest Missouri State beat Quincy for the second consecutive match. Northwest defeated the Hawks 25-17, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-23. The Bearcats were led by freshman Kelsey Larson's 13 kills and .571 hitting percentage. Sara Falcone added 12 kills, three block assists and four service aces for Northwest.

Laira Akin once again led the Bearcats with 33 assists, Akin also contributed with two kills and four digs. Junior libero Paige Spangenberg led Northwest with 15 digs. The Bearcats hit .280 as a team while holding Quincy to just a .132 hitting percentage, and had 12 service aces in the match.

Northwest closed out day one with a three sets to one loss to St. Joseph's College. The Bearcats came out firing in match one winning 25-23. St. Joe's would respond however sweeping the next three games 29-27, 25-22 and 25-17 to take the match.

Alex Hanna led Northwest with 13 kills. Amber Ryan, Ashley Mitchell and Falcone all added 11 kills each for the Bearcats. The Bearcats once again out-hit their opponent but couldn't overcome their 19 attack errors and 13 receiving errors.

Akin had a superb game from her setter spot recording a career-high 47 assists. Akin also had eight digs in the match. Spangenberg led the Bearcat receiving with 18 digs, Falcone chipped in with 13.

The Bearcats (7-3) finish off the tournament tomorrow against host-Wisconsin-Parkside at 12:30 p.m. and will close out the tournament against 13th ranked Indianapolis at 5:30.
