Northwest Bearcats

Press Release

Sept. 11, 2009

Back To Wisconsin

Laira Akin, Sophomore, S/OH, Volleyball

Hello again Bearcat fans!

I can't tell you how much fun it was for me, as a newcomer to get to experience the excitement of playing my first game at home in Bearcat Arena! It was wonderful to have the fans cheering for us, and not against us! I was so happy with the turnout we had at our games, the TKE Fraternity was our loyal cheering section all weekend and let me tell you, I would not want to be the away team in Bearcat. They really know how to cheer us on! Thanks guys! And thanks to everyone else who showed up to support us. It's a lot of fun to put on a good show for all of you :)

This blog is coming to you from the road since I got a little swamped with homework since we are missing two days of classes. So I'm actually writing this on my laptop on the bus somewhere in Illinois...I could be Wisconsin...I'm not quite sure. It's dark outside and we've been driving for a while!

Since last time, the only really interesting thing that's happened is that school has started YAY!! I was very excited for that to happen and let me tell you Northwest you did not disappoint me! I am loving all my classes and the campus is so nice, although it would have been nice if the buildings were marked a little better...I walked into three different buildings trying to find my class one day. Of course I could have just asked someone but then where's the fun in that :)

I'm really excited for our matches this weekend because we're going to be really close to my old school, Marquette, and even as we're driving it's fun to be getting close to Milwaukee. Now don't get me wrong I love Maryville and being closer to home, but a part of me will always love Milwaukee and it's fun to get to be back up here.

I'm also excited to see what our team is going to play like in these matches. We've been building on our great start in Memphis and I'm expecting great things. I'm also happy we're going get a good test against our first ranked opponent. It'll be a good gage for us going into conference play against Washburn (on Wednesday everyone should come!).

Practices have been going well and our team continues to impress me with how quickly we can adjust to something Coach wants us to try. From an offensive standpoint we are adding more quick tempo attacks to our frontline, which is only able to happen with the support of our fabulous defense led by our libero Paige :) A setter should always appreciate a libero because she makes me look good and because it makes my job easy and I definitely love mine - she's one of the best I've ever seen!

But we're nearing our hotel, I guess we were in Wisconsin, so I'm going to say goodbye for now and I hope to see you all at the game Wednesday cheering us on in our first conference match.
