Bearcats Split at Home
Maryville, Mo.- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team split a pair of games on Friday at the Comfort INNvitational. The Bearcats defeated Newman in their first match 25-22, 25-16 and 25-22.
Sara Falcone led the offensive attack with 13 kills and hit .500, and also had three block assists. Alex Hanna had nine kills and Amber Ryan and Ashley Mitchell each added eight. Laira Akin led the squad with 40 assists and chipped in with three kills. Paige Spangenberg had 12 digs to lead the Bearcats.
Northwest hit .269 in the match while holding the Jets to just .121. The Bearcats also added six service aces in the sweep.
Northwest would get swept by Minnesota State-Moorhead in their second match of the day. Losing 22-25, 17-25 and 19-25.
The Bearcats struggled with their attack hitting just .180, while MSU-Moorhead hit .330. Hanna led the Bearcat hitters with nine kills, Mitchell and Falcone added seven apiece. Akin once again had a superb game distributing the ball accounting for 29 of Northwest's 31 assists.
Spangenberg had 11 digs to lead the Northwest return. Akin and Ryan would each add three block assists for the Bearcat defense.
Laura Tvrdik led the Dragons with 15 kills in the match and hit a blistering .700.
Northwest (4-2) hosts the second day of the Comfort INNvitational tomorrow at Bearcat Arena. The action once again starts at 10 a.m. The Bearcats will play their matches at 2:30 and 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Commerce and Quincy.
