Northwest at CBU Tournament Day 2
Memphis, Tenn. -The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team split a pair of games today in the second day of the Christian Brother's Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. Northwest would fall to host-Christian Brothers 3-2 and defeated Missouri-St. Louis 3-1.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead on Christian Brothers winning the first two games 25-15 and 25-20. But CBU would rally to take the final three games of the match winning 18-25, 23-25 and 12-15.
Sara Falcone and Alex Hanna led the Bearcats with 12 kills each. Laira Akin once again led Northwest with 43 assists and recorded four aces and 15 digs. Amber Guthrie recorded a career-high 11 kills. Paige Spangenberg had 29 digs. Guthrie, Ashley Mitchell and Amber Ryan each recorded four block assists for Northwest, while Falcone had five.
The Bearcats would finish the day on a high note with a win over UMSL. The Tritons would win the first game 25-20, but Northwest would take the final three 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23.
Ryan led three Bearcats in double-digit kills with 14, and had five total blocks. Guthrie and Mitchell would add 12 and 10 kills respectively. Akin led Northwest with 39 assists giving her 151 for the tournament. Spangenberg had 20 digs, and a tournament total of 89. Hanna led five Bearcats with 30+ kills in the tournament with 38. Falcone and Ryan had 35 each.
Northwest (3-1) will host the Comfort INNvitational Sept. 4th and 5th. The Bearcats will face Newman, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Texas A&M-Commerce and Quincy. Northwest's first match will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
