Volleyball Sweeps First Two Matches
MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team opened its 2009 season by sweeping a pair of matches today at the Christian Brothers Tournament in Memphis, Tenn.
The Bearcats swept Ouachita Baptist 25-14, 25-15 and 25-17 in their first match. Sara Falcone had 15 kills and hit .619 (15-2-21) for Northwest. Ashley Mitchell and Amber Ryan added nine and eight kills respectively.
Laira Akin had 37 assists in her Bearcat debut. The transfer from Marquette University also had two kills and seven assists. Paige Spangenberg, the Bearcats' leader in digs the past two seasons, picked up where she left off last season leading Northwest with 17 digs. Andrea Potter had 10 digs.
Northwest would finish the day with a sweep against Illinois-Springfield winning 25-13, 25-12 and 25-17. Alex Hanna had a match-high 11 kills for the Bearcats giving her 17 for the day. Mitchell added nine while junior transfer Amber Guthrie hit .545 (6-0-11). Akin had 32 assists and a pair of aces. Spangenberg added two aces and recorded 23 digs. Ryan had seven total blocks in the match.
The Bearcats never trailed the first day of the tournament and hit .346 as a team, and also out-blocked their opponents 15-2.
Northwest will wrap up play at the tournament tomorrow, taking on host-Christian Brothers at 10 a.m. and Missouri-St. Louis at 2 p.m.
