Bearcats at Christian Brother's Tournament Preview

Northwest travels to the Christian Brothers Tournament this weekend in Memphis, Tenn. Northwest will face Ouachita Baptist and Illinois-Springfield on Friday, and Missouri-St. Louis and host Christian Brothers on Saturday.

The Bearcats are traveling to the state of Tennessee for the first time in program history. Northwest's season gets under way at 1 p.m. on Friday against Ouachita Baptist. The Tigers went 10-25 last season.

Northwest will face Illinois-Springfield later in the day at 5 p.m. Senior hitter Sarah Cooper returns for the Prairie Stars after an all-conference selection in 2008. Cooper led UIS with 316 kills and recorded 67 blocks.

The Bearcats play host-Christian Brothers at 10 a.m. Saturday. Last season the Buccaneers went 25-10 - their first winning season since 2005. They also went 8-4 in the Gulf South Conference, they're first winning record in the league since 1995.

Northwest will finish with UMSL Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Tritons went 23-8 a year ago and won the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division crown.

Northwest returns five players who started 20 or more games last season for the Bearcats. Included in that group are juniors Sara Falcone, Amber Ryan and Paige Spangenberg who were named to the 2008 MIAA honorable mention team. Sophomore Andrea Potter also returns to the squad after playing significant time for the Bearcats last year.

Northwest hasn't played either of these teams since 2006 when they beat UMSL 3-2. Outside hitter Ashley Mitchell was a redshirt freshman that year and recorded two kills and three block assists against the Tritons.
