MIAA Preseason Volleyball Coaches' Poll Released
Kansas City, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team has been picked to finish seventh this year in the MIAA as voted on by the conference's coaches and announced Wednesday by the MIAA office, with a total of 40 points. The Bearcats finished the 2008 season with a 7-13 record in the MIAA and finished seventh overall.
Defending champion Emporia State was selected to repeat as champions of the MIAA after receiving five first-place votes and 94 total points. Coming in at second was last season's runner-up, Washburn, who also received five first-place votes, but finished two points behind Emporia State in the voting. Central Missouri, with new coach Flip Piontek was picked to finish third with a total of 79 points. Nebraska-Omaha received the remaining first-place vote in the poll. The Mavericks were picked to finish tied for fourth with Truman.
The Bearcats welcome eight new players to the squad this season, who join All-MIAA honorable mention performers Sara Falcone, Amber Ryan and Paige Spangenberg.
Northwest begins its season Friday, Aug. 28, at the Christian Brothers Tournament in Memphis, Tenn., against Ouachita Baptist and Illinois-Springfield. The Bearcats' first home match is Sept. 4 against Newman University, as part of Northwest's Comfort INNvitational. Northwest opens up MIAA play at home against Washburn Sept. 16.
