Falcone Sets Arena Record in Sweep of Griffons
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Sara Falcone made 15 kills off 23 attempts to hit .652 and set a new Bearcat Arena record as Northwest Missouri State (10-22, 7-12) swept Missouri Western (4-31, 1-18) tonight. Scores went 25-21, 25-9 and 25-19.
Northwest used a 7-1 run in the first set to take a 10-4 lead, with four points coming from Falcone (two aces, two kills). The Bearcats held off a late Griffon rally to take the first set 25-21.
A 10-1 rally to open the second set and another seven-point swing sealed a 25-9 victory, the largest Bearcat winning margin in any set this season. Northwest hit .350 as a team in the set and made five team blocks.
The teams tied six times in the third set, the last at 11-11, before a pair of kills from both Falcone and Alex Hanna opened a 15-11 lead. Northwest hit .311 and made another five blocks in a 25-19 win.
Falcone's .652 hitting percentage is the best in any three-set match in Bearcat Arena history and surpassed the .615 recorded by former assistant coach and current assistant athletic director Steph Martin. It's also the second-best percentage in any three-set match in program history and is fifth for overall matches. Falcone tacked on 10 digs for her fourth double-double this season and made a career-best seven blocks.
Hanna recorded her seventh straight match with double-digit kills with 10 tonight. Amber Ryan added another 10 kills and hit .381 with eight digs and six blocks.
Paige Spangenberg improved her career digs total to 1,233 with 19 tonight and moved into seventh in all-time program records. Katie Swenson made 39 assists, the most in a three-set match this season.
Up Next: Northwest closes the 2008 season with a 7 p.m. match at No. 9 Truman Nov. 14.
