Northwest Defeats Missouri Western 3-1

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Northwest hit .252 as a team in the final three sets and made 11 blocks to defeat Missouri Western 3-1 tonight from the Looney Complex in St. Joseph, Mo. All five starting hitters had five or more kills and four Bearcats made multiple blocks as Northwest recorded its third-straight win against the Griffons.

After a 25-16 loss in the opening set, Northwest scored the first six points in the second set, aided by four Griffon attack errors. Smaller rallies of three and four points built a 13-3 lead before another five-point swing put the Bearcats ahead 22-7. Northwest committed only one attack error in a 25-11 win to even the match at 1-1.

Both teams traded points to open the third set through a 3-3 score before a four-point Bearcat swing off the serving of Andrea Potter provided a 7-3 lead. Missouri Western tied the set at 18-18 and again at 19-19 and 20-20 before the Bearcats scored five of the final six points for a 25-21 victory.

Both teams played to an 8-8 tie in the fourth set before a 6-1 Northwest rally, aided by kills from Amber Ryan and Iesha Haskins, provided a 14-9 lead. Back-to-back kills from Sara Falcone during a 5-1 Northwest run built a 19-13 lead. The Griffons fought off match point twice before an attack error sealed the set for Northwest at 25-18.

Rachel Nisi led all Bearcats with 10 kills as she reached double-digit kills for the seventh time this season. Falcone recorded nine kills, hit .318 and had a season-best six blocks while Haskins added eight kills and a career-best six blocks. Ryan contributed eight kills and four blocks and Alex Hanna tallied five kills.

Paige Spangenberg led all players with 29 digs. Katie Swenson provided 23 assists and Potter added 13 more as the Bearcats continue to move toward a 6-2 system.

Up Next: Northwest hosts No. 12 Truman Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Bearcat Arena. It will be a part of the Northwest Homecoming Weekend.
