Volleyball To Make Shortest Road Trip of Season to Rival Missouri Western
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest will look to get back into the win column again with a 45.7-mile trip to Looney Complex for a 7 p.m. match with Missouri Western Oct. 15 in St. Joseph, Mo. The Bearcats (6-14, 3-5) swept the Griffons (3-21, 0-8) in both matches last season.
As Northwest celebrates its homecoming this weekend, Wednesday will be a homecoming of sorts for graduate assistant Alyssa Berg. Berg led the Griffons in kills, blocks, aces and hitting percentage in 2007 before becoming the Bearcats' second straight graduate assistant coach to complete undergraduate work at Missouri Western.
Senior Amy Bohnker has a career hitting percentage of .333 against Missouri Western and hits .400 when playing the Griffons in St. Joseph, Mo. She will be the only senior on the court for either team, as Missouri Western carries no seniors on its roster.
A block by Rachel Nisi will extended her blocking streak to six matches and tie a personal best. She's recorded six blocks in five matches since Sept. 26. Sara Falcone has averaged 0.91 blocks per set in the past three matches, totaling 10 since Oct. 2 at South Dakota.
Sophomores Megan Voelz and Kelli Sicner lead the Griffon offense, combining for 358 kills and 42 percent of the team's kill total. The defense is led by junior libero Shari Tompkins with 225 digs freshman middle hitter Alexandra Behnke with 49 blocks.
The Northwest-Missouri Western series has seen a program-high 276 sets since the two teams started playing each other in 1977. The Bearcats will meet the Griffons for the 82nd time in series history, the second-most among Bearcat opponents behind Central Missouri (85).
Wednesday's match will be the first video webcast from Looney Complex featured on themiaa.tv. Live stats will available through the MIAA Scoreboard.
