Bearcats Take Break from MIAA Action with Trip to South Dakota

Match Notes (.pdf)

MARYVILLE, Mo. - A break from MIAA action allows the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team to travel north as the Bearcats head to Vermillion, S.D., to take on South Dakota. The Coyotes are in their first year of provisional NCAA Division I membership.

Northwest is 12-3 against South Dakota all-time, winning the last match between the two in five sets at Bearcat Arena Sept. 27, 2007. Four Bearcats had double-digit kills and five had double-digit digs with Rachel Nisi and Alicia Johnson earning double-doubles. The Coyotes were receiving votes at the time in the AVCA national poll.

Katie Swenson could move up two spots with a strong performance against the Coyotes. Swenson needs 44 assists to move from seventh to fifth in all-time career records and pass Jennifer Hepburn and Sherri Miller. Swenson averaged 56.5 assists against South Dakota in two matches last season.

Amber Ryan recorded her first career double-double in Northwest's last outing against Southwest Baptist Sept. 27 with 21 kills and 14 digs, both career-highs. Ryan's season-high for kills in 2007 came against South Dakota Sept. 27, when Ryan had 16 kills off 50 attempts.

South Dakota won its first 11 matches of the season, including nine by 3-0 margins, before a 3-0 loss to Nebraska-Kearney. A two-time Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Amber Kobus leads the Coyotes with 5.15 digs per set and is 10th in Division II statistics. Heather Hult also earned Great West Offensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season and carries a .344 hitting percentage into Thursday's match.
