Ryan's Career Day Leads Northwest Past Southwest Baptist
BOLIVAR, Mo. - Amber Ryan recorded her first career double-double with 21 kills and 14 digs, both career bests, to lead Northwest to a 3-1 victory against Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center. Northwest held Southwest Baptist well below its blocking average of 2.33 per set, allowing three blocks in the four sets.
Northwest never held a lead in the first set until a kill from Katie Swenson put the Bearcats ahead 25-24. Northwest closed the set on a 6-1 run to win 27-25. Ryan finished the first set with nine kills, more than half the team's kills in the set, and hit .389.
Southwest Baptist answered with a late run in the second set, scoring the final seven points in a 25-21 victory in the second set.
The purple Bearcats scored four straight points in the third set to lead 19-15, but Northwest used another late run, scoring the final 10 points off the serving of Rachel Nisi for a 25-19 green Bearcat win in the third set.
A four-point swing midway through the fourth set, capped by a service ace by Ryan, put Northwest ahead 12-9. Southwest Baptist continued to chip at the lead to eventually tie the set at 21-21. Each team would exchange points through 24-24 before kills from Ryan and Sara Falcone ended the set at 26-24.
On top of her double-double, Ryan led all players with five blocks while adding a service ace for 24.5 points. Falcone recorded a season-high 14 kills and .387 hitting percentage. Swenson finished with 50 assists, surpassing the half-century mark for the second time this season. Five Bearcats hit double-digit digs, led by Paige Spangenberg's 33, to provide a team total of 98, the most as a team since Sept. 27, 2007.
