Bearcats Sweep Lions; Ryan Leads Northwest with 16 Kills
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Amber Ryan had 16 kills and hit .517 to lead Northwest to its first sweep of the season against Missouri Southern tonight at Bearcat Arena. Scores went 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 as Northwest hit .255 as a team.
The Bearcats (5-10, 2-2) jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set with a pair of kills from Amber Ryan and Alex Hanna and a service ace by Iesha Haskins during a 5-0 Bearcat run. Another four-point rally off the serving of Paige Spangenberg built the lead to 14-7, and the Bearcats held off a late rally from the Lions to take a 25-20 win in the opening set.
The Bearcats hit .379 as a team and used a six-point rally to take a 10-5 lead in the second set. The Lions narrowed the lead to three points at 17-14, but could not close the gap and a kill from Ryan ended the set at 25-18 for Northwest.
Missouri Southern and Northwest exchanged the lead nine times in the third set until a six-point rally off the serving of Haskins put the Bearcats ahead 17-13. Both teams exchanged points until a block from Ryan and Haskins ended the third set at 25-19.
Ryan had more than 15 kills for the fourth time this season and hit greater than .500 for the second time in her career. Alex Hanna had 10 kills for her best performance of the conference season. Spangenberg led all players with 15 digs while Katie Swenson recorded 38 assists, the most in a three-set match this season.
