Northwest Hosts Ranked Emporia State Today at 3 p.m.
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State faces its second ranked opponent this week in No. 14 Emporia State (12-1, 2-0) today at 3 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. The Bearcats are going for their second-straight win after defeating Fort Hays State 3-1 last night in the home-opener.
The Hornets have won their last nine matches, including a win against No. 11 Truman Sept. 17. In the last meeting against Emporia State at Bearcat Arena, Northwest held a 2-1 lead before losing in five sets.
Amber Ryan reached double-digit kills and recorded four of more blocks for the fourth time in the last five matches against the Tigers and hit greater than .400 for the fourth time this season. She's leading the Bearcat offense with a .321 hitting percentage, 137 kills and 40 blocks in 13 matches this season.
Katie Swenson nearly tallied her fifth-straight double-double against Fort Hays State with 44 assists and nine digs. Her 438 assists this season is already within 130 assists of cracking the top five in sophomore season records.
Two more block assists will move Amy Bohnker up to sixth in all-time career records. She recorded a season-high six against Fort Hays State Sept. 19 to improve her four-year total to 231.
Head Coach Anna Tool moved into a tie for sixth in all-time Northwest coaching records with her 35th Bearcat victory against Fort Hays State last night. A win against Emporia State would put Tool alone in sixth and one away from fifth.
The Hornets are led by junior Arica Shepard, who also leads the MIAA with 3.69 kills per set. Setter Ling Liu leads the conference and is fifth nationally with 11.69 assists per set. Emporia State easily handled Missouri Western last night, defeating the Griffons 25-19, 25-11, 25-12.
