Bearcats Face No. 3 Washburn in Tough MIAA Opener
MARYVILLE, Mo. - After a trip to New York, Northwest volleyball plays its 12th straight match away from Bearcat Arena Sept. 17, opening the MIAA season at No. 3 Washburn. The Lady Blues, who also traveled to the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational, play at Lee Arena for the first time this season.
Washburn is 11-0 to start the season, one of 15 undefeated teams in Division II.
Katie Swenson is ranked third in MIAA statistics and 53rd in Division II with 9.36 assists per game. She's followed by Washburn's Kate Hampson, who is fourth in the MIAA and 58th nationally with 9.23 per game. Both players are ranked in the top 10 in career assists for their respective programs (Swenson-7th, Hampson-3rd).
Swenson turned in three double-double performances last weekend, improving her season tally to six. Swenson has now recorded double-doubles in 21 of her 45 career matches.
Amber Ryan moved up one spot to seventh in MIAA hitting percentage and 45 spots to 59th in NCAA statistics, improving her season average from .317 to .335 over the weekend. She sits behind Washburn freshman Mollie Lacy, who is fifth overall at .353.
Even after starting the season as an outside hitter, Paige Spangenberg still maintains a school-record pace with 4.51 career digs per set. She is averaging nearly a dig per set better than the current record of 3.69 recorded in 1997-2000 by MIAA MVP Jill Quast. Spangenberg is also leading Northwest with 11 service aces this season.
A win would tie Head Coach Anna Tool with coach Lori Slight (2003-05) for sixth in all-time Northwest coaching victories at 35. A win would also be the first against the Lady Blues since Oct. 17, 2006, Northwest defeated No. 15 Washburn 3-1 in Bearcat Arena..
