Northwest Ends Losing Streak in 3-1 Win Against Adelphi
OAKDALE, N.Y. - Amber Ryan led Northwest in kills for the third straight match and helped Northwest end it's six-match losing streak in a 3-1 victory against Adelphi to wrap up the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational at Dowling College.
The Bearcats fell behind early in the first set, but a five-point rally off Adelphi attack errors provided a 5-4 lead in the first set. The rally opened into a 14-6 lead that held to a 25-19 victory.
Adelphi used a 6-1 scoring run to open a 10-5 lead in the second set. Ryan hit .714 on five kills with no errors in the set, but the Bearcats could not regain the lead in a 25-15 setback.
The Panthers started well in the third set, taking an early 9-1 lead. Northwest countered with small rallies to tie the score at 16. A four-point Adelphi rally opened a four-point lead for the Panthers, and a 5-1 Northwest rally tied the score again at 22. Blocks from Rachel Nisi and Sara Falcone and a kill from Nisi put the Bearcats ahead for the first time in the set on the way to a 25-23 victory.
Back-to-back service aces from Paige Spangenberg contributed to a six-point Northwest rally in the fourth set as the Bearcats took an early 10-3 lead. Northwest hit .229 as a team in the fourth set, and four Bearcats hit three kills apiece, en route to a 25-16 victory.
Ryan led Northwest with 13 kills and a career-high eight blocks. Falcone hit a match-high .385 off 12 kills. Spangenberg led three Bearcats in double-digit digs with 23, followed by Katie Swenson's 14 and Nisi's 13.
The Bearcats (3-8) open the MIAA schedule at No. 2 Washburn Sept. 17. First serve from Lee Arena is 7 p.m.
