Bearcats Rally to Force Fifth Set in Loss to Bentley

Box Score

OAKDALE, N.Y. - Northwest volleyball rallied from a 2-0 deficit and held a late lead in set five, but lost to Bentley in the first match of the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational at Dowling College. Three Bearcats hit double-digit kills and Amber Ryan hit above .300 for the sixth time this season.

Rachel Nisi led the Bearcats with a pair of kills on a five-point rally late in the first set to tie the score at 21-21. Ryan contributed with three of her career-best four service aces in the first set, as Northwest lost 27-25.

After trailing 19-9 in the second set, the Bearcats scored six straight points, two off of kills from Alex Hanna. Another four-point rally brought Northwest within one at 23-22, helped by a pair of Bentley attack errors and a block from Nisi and Ryan. The Bearcats went down 2-0 after a 25-22 loss in the second set.

Northwest used a five-point rally midway through the third set to take a 14-10 lead, using a pair of kills from Ryan and Iesha Haskins. Bentley worked to within one point of the Bearcats twice, but a kill from Ryan put the Falcons away in 25-22 fashion for the first set victory since Aug. 30.

The Bearcats led from the start in the fourth set as Bentley committed 14 attack errors. Northwest won easily 25-16 to force a fifth set.

Two more attack errors from Bentley and a service ace from Nisi helped the Bearcats take an early 4-1 lead. Northwest held off two more ties to take a 16-15 lead for a chance at match point. But the Falcons rallied for the final three points for an 18-16 victory and the 3-2 match win.

Ryan led all players with 18 kills, followed by Hanna with 16. Haskins rounded out the Bearcat leaders with 13 kills. Katie Swenson recorded 51 assists, reaching 50 assists for the first time this season. Paige Spangenberg led the Bearcats with 18 digs.

Northwest continues play tomorrow at 9 a.m. CDT against host Dowling. The Golden Lions (7-4) lost in three sets to Washburn earlier tonight.
