Bearcats Sweep Missouri Western in Home Finale
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Alicia Johnson notched her 20th double-double of the season to lead Northwest Missouri State to a 3-0 sweep of Missouri Western tonight in the regular season finale. The Bearcats won by 30-27, 30-19, 30-16 scores. Its the first time since 1996 that the Bearcats have won two straight matches versus the Griffons.
The Bearcats finish the regular season 17-16 (6-7 MIAA) and will grab a No. 3 seed in the MIAA tournament that begins next Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Emporia, Kan. versus the Lady Hornets.
Early runs in games one and two helped Northwest deminish the Griffons hopes for a victory. A 6-0 run in game one, led by the serving of Alicia Johnson, and an 8-0 run in game two, led by the serving of Nicole Wojtowicz, helped Northwest to comfortable leads. In game two, Johnson recorded three aces in-a-row finishing with six in the match.
Johnson finished with 15 kills and hit .407 at the net, while Paige Spangenberg led the defensive charge with 18 digs. Katie Swenson dished out 49 assists and had 11 digs. Northwest hit .271 at the net, including .447 in the game three.
