Bearcats Fall in Five to No. 21 Emporia State
MARYVILLE, Mo. - (Box Score) The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team dropped a five-game match to No. 21 Emporia State in front of a season-high 485 fans. The scores went 20-30, 30-25, 26-30, 30-23 and 15-9. The Bearcats now stand 1-4 in five-game matches this season and are 1-7 versus ranked opponents.
The loss drops Northwest to 15-12 overall and 4-4 in MIAA play. The comeback win give Emporia State a 19-6 overall record and 6-2 in MIAA play.
Game one was all Northwest hitting .351 at the net, blocking six Emporia attacks along the way. MIAA aces leader, Alicia Johnson, closed out the Hornets with four aces in the last five points. Game two was nip and tuck, with neither team leading by more than three points until Emporia went on a 4-1 run to lead 21-15. Northwest came within two at 23-25, but could only muster two more points as Emporia closed out game two winning 30-25.
In game three, the Bearcats came out firing leading 12-6 early. The Hornets got within three at 27-24 before Northwest took a 2-1 advantage into game four. Northwest struggled at the net in games four and five hitting just .188 and .056 after .300 plus hitting percentages in the first three games.
Rachel Nisi led the way offensively with 20 kills, tying a career-high, and recorded her tenth double-double with 11 digs. Amy Bohnker had 12 kills and was extremely efficient hitting .423 at the net. Paige Spangenberg broke a career-high with 29 digs, while setter Katie Swenson was one off her career-high in assists with 65.
The Bearcats will meet their ninth ranked opponent in No. 11 Pittsburg State on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. The match is scheduled in Bearcat Arena, so stop on by after the Bearcat football team takes on Central Missouri at 1 p.m.
