Five Reach Double Figures In Win

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest had all five hitters reach double-figure kills as the Bearcats beat Missouri Southern, 3-1, in an MIAA contest at Bearcat Arena Wednesday. Scores went 30-16, 28-30, 30-21 and 30-27. It was the first time since 2005 that Northwest has placed five players in double digits.

The win moves Northwest (12-11) even in conference play at 3-3. The Lions (10-11) lost their fourth match in a row and fall to 1-7.

Sara Falcone had 17 kills in the season-opener against Montevallo and equaled that mark against Missouri Southern. Alicia Johnson reached double-digit kills for the 18th consecutive match, extending her program record. Amy Bohnker set a career high with 13 kills and had a season-high 10 blocks. Rachel Nisi and Amber Ryan chipped in 12 kills.

Katie Swenson finished with a game-high 58 assists. Nicole Wojtowicz had a team-high 14 kills and Paige Spangenberg added 12.

Northwest hit .324 in game one and easily took the opener, 30-16. The Bearcats rallied from a 25-19 deficit in game two and had two swings to tie the game at 29. Missouri Southern took game two 30-28.

The turning point in the match came in game three, where Northwest turned a 17-13 deficit into a 28-20 advantage. Alicia Johnson served eight straight points and was aided by three consecutive kills and two blocks by Falcone. Ryan and Bohnker combined for 11 of the team's first 18 points before Falcone and Johnson finished the rally.

The Lions jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game four, but the Bearcats quickly rebounded and took a 14-12 lead. Falcone had five kills in the game and Ryan added four.

Northwest hit .312 in the contest and improved to 8-0 when hitting .300 or more. Bohnker had eight block assists and two solo blocks as part of 12 kills for the Bearcats.

Cherie Baugh and Ashlee Russell had 18 and 17 kills, respectively, to lead Missouri Southern. Sarah Joles had 52 assists and Kari Hammerbacher recorded a match-high 16 digs.
