Bearcats Upset Nationally-Recognized South Dakota in Five Games
MARYVILLE - (Box Score) Northwest Missouri State volleyball handed South Dakota it's second loss of the season in a five-game match tonight from Bearcat Arena. Northwest won in 28-30, 30-25, 19-30, 32-30, 17-15 fashion.
Northwest improves to 11-10 while the Coyotes, who were receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, fall to 16-2.
The Bearcats held a marginal lead through the first half of game one before the Coyotes went on a six point run to take a 21-18 lead. The Bearcats tied the game at 24, but South Dakota edged out a 30-28 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Northwest took the first five points of game two off the serving of Katie Swenson and never let South Dakota within two points in winning game two 30-25. The Bearcats hit .318 in the second game, recording 18 kills and four errors on 44 attempts.
South Dakota used a 10-1 run in game three to build a 16-5 lead. The Coyotes took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-19 victory in the third stanza.
The Bearcats battled back from a 25-20 defecit in game four to tie the game at 27. Northwest faced match point at 30-29 but used a pair of kills from Amber Ryan and Amy Bohnker to take a 31-30 lead. An attack error from Laura Slagter left Northwest the victors in game four at 32-30.
The Coyotes took a 6-3 advantage in game five before a 5-1 run by the Bearcats put Northwest up 8-7. South Dakota had match point twice in final game, a solo block from Sara Falcone provided the winning point at 17-15.
Alicia Johnson recorded 22 kills, extending her streak of double-digit kills in a match to 16. Rachel Nisi, Sara Falcone and Ryan each contributed with over 10 kills as well. Paige Spangenberg led the Bearcats with a career-high 29 digs, while Swenson recorded 62 assists.
Northwest faces No. 7 Washburn on Sept. 29. First serve from Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan., is 1 p.m.
- Swenson is averaging 12.09 assists per game, fourth in all-time season records.
- Ryan set a new personal record with 16 kills.
- Falcone tied her personal record with six blocks tonight.
- Second nationally-recognized team the Bearcats have defeated this season (first was No. 18 Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 19).
- The Bearcats recorded 104 digs, the most since digging the ball 105 times vs. Truman on Sept. 12, 2006.
- Northwest attacked the ball 245 times, a new record (previous record was 244 vs. Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) on Oct. 8, 2005).
