Bearcats Face South Dakota for Second Time This Season
MARYVILLE - (Match Notes) Northwest Missouri State volleyball welcomes South Dakota back to Bearcat Arena for the second time this season in a 7 p.m. match tonight.
The Coyotes took a 3-1 match on Sept. 7 during the Bearcat Classic. Alicia Johnson led Northwest in that match with 19 kills and 10 digs and Rachel Nisi also recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs.
Northwest is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Missouri Western on Sept. 25. The Bearcats hit 18 aces against the Griffons, a school record for a three-game match. Northwest held the Griffons to 15 points in game three, the fewest allowed in a 30-point game against Missouri Western since the NCAA went to 30-point games in 2001.
Johnson hit 12 kills against the Griffons, extending her streak of double-digit kills to 15 matches. The streak is the longest since Jill Quast hit double-digit kills for 14 straight matches in 1997.
Katie Swenson is averaging 12.07 assists per game this season and is fourth in MIAA statistics and 30th in the NCAA.
South Dakota is 16-1 after suffering the first loss of the season to No. 11 Augustana on Sept. 14. The Coyotes are receiving votes in the AVCA national poll released on Tuesday. Middle hitter Kathleen Hruska is the first player in Coyote history to earn North Central Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors twice in one season. She is leading the team with 287 kills and a .397 hitting percentage.
