Bearcats Upset No. 18 Nebraska-Omaha 3-1

MARYVILLE - (Box Score) Northwest Missouri State upset its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season, defeating No. 18 Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 at Bearcat Arena tonight. Scores went 30-25, 26-30, 30-22, 30-28.

The Bearcats improve to 9-9, while the Mavericks drop to 7-5.

Northwest battled from a 9-3 deficit early in game one, but a kill from Sara Falcone sparked the Bearcats to a 6-1 run to bring the score within one at 11-10. A 6-1 run midway through the game saw Northwest take a 19-17 lead that the Bearcats never relinquished on the way to a 30-25 victory in game one. Falcone ended the first game hitting .545 on seven kills and one error off of 11 attempts.

The Bearcats fell behind 10-4 in game two, aided by a 7-0 run by Nebraska-Omaha. A kill from Katie Swenson evened the score at 15-15, but a 4-1 rally by the Mavericks kept them ahead en route to a 30-26 victory.

Northwest took a 9-4 lead to start the third game, including two straight service aces from Alicia Johnson. A 5-0 run by the Bearcats, sparked by an attack error from Ellen Thommes, gave Northwest a 20-13 lead that held to a 30-22 victory in game three.

A kill from Amy Bohnker stopped a 4-0 start by the Mavericks in game four, and a 9-1 run by the Bearcats put Northwest up 15-9 later in the game. Nebraska-Omaha gradually chipped at the margin, managing to cut the difference to one at 29-28. A kill from Amber Ryan ended the match, providing the first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since Oct. 24, 2006.

Falcone led the Bearcats with 16 kills and two blocks. Johnson and Rachel Nisi each contributed 13 kills, while Johnson also managed a team-high three service aces and 18 digs. Swenson led both teams with 47 assists.

Northwest closes out its home stand on Sept. 22, welcoming No. 5 Central Missouri for a 5 p.m. match.
