Conference Season Opens for Bearcats
Northwest Missouri State will open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) play versus Southwest Baptist Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 pm. The Bearcats currently hold an eight-match winning streak against SBU and have won 12 straight home matches versus the Lady Bearcats. Three more consecutive home matches will follow the SBU with two nationally ranked opponents, Florida Southern and Truman, traveling to Maryville.
The Bearcats split another Classic, the third consecutive time, losing to South Dakota and No. 17 Augustana and beating Texas A&M International and Newman (Kan.). Northwest nearly pulled an upset versus Augustana up 2-1 after three games. In game four, Northwest had match point but the Vikings reeled off three straight points and won game five 15-11.
The .433 team hitting percentage versus Texas A&M International was the third best all-time for a single match at Northwest. In the six losses, the Bearcats are hitting .146 compared to .338 in the six wins. The five game match versus No. 17 Augustana was the third five game match this season. A season-high 103 team digs accompanied the 3-2 loss against Augustana.
Amy Bohnker and Katie Swenson awarded All-Tournament team at the Nebraska-Kearney Volleyball Classic. Alicia Johnson nabbed All-Tournament team at the St. Edward's Classic. The Bearcat Classic saw two Bearcats, Alicia Johnson and Katie Swenson make All-Tournament team.
The Lady Bearcats (5-8, 0-1 MIAA) already opened conference play with a 3-0 loss to Pittsburg State. Southwest Baptist returns to Maryville just four days after they played in the Bearcat Classic. Libero Shyrah Perry received All-tournament team at the Bearcat Classic.
The Truman State Bulldogs (9-3, 0-0 MIAA) are ranked 6th nationally. One of Truman's losses was to No. 3 ranked Concordia-St. Paul. Northwest has lost 15 straight matches to Truman State. Melissa Keck leads the Bulldogs at the net with 3.41 kills per game and a .354 hitting percentage. Truman averages nearly two aces per game with a 1.9 avg.
The Florida Southern Mocs (9-1, 0-0 SSC) come in nationally ranked at No. 5. Florida Southern's only loss was versus Nebraska-Omaha at home on Aug. 31. Ashley Martin is averaging 4.45 kills per game with a .342 hitting percentage.
The Upper Iowa Peacocks (2-6, NSIC 0-0) are currently on a five match losing streak. Darcy Hageman leads Upper iowa with 3.86 kills per game with Shea Meyermann leading the defensive charge with 3.71 digs per game.
