
No. 17 Augustana (8-2) earned its second win at the Northwest Missouri State Bearcat Classic following a 3-1 decision over Southwest Baptist. Scores went 25-30, 30-18, 30-28 and 30-28. Southwest Baptist (4-7) beat Texas A&M International earlier in the day and is 1-1 for the tournament.
Augustana got another strong performance out of Cayla Schroeder and Kati Newgard. Schroeder led the Vikings with 18 kills and hit .326 for the contest (18-4-43). Newgard was one behind with 17 spikes and added two blocks.
Jessen Brittni followed a 16-kill performance against International with a match-high 24 kills and a .413 percentage (24-5-46) against Augustana. Setters Brianna Wallace and Chelsea Kenney each posted double-doubles for the Lady Bearcats. Kenney had 25 assists and 13 digs. Wallace chimed in with 24 assists and 10 digs.
The story of the match was game three, where Southwest Baptist couldn’t hold a 10-point lead. The Vikings chipped away and eventually tied the game at 24. Blythe Johnson served four consecutive points to give Augustana a 27-24 lead. Back-to-back kills by Newgard closed out the game for the Vikings.
Neither team led by more than three points in game four until a kill by Beth Talcott put Augustana up 25-21. Southwest Baptist fought back to make it 29-28 before Ellen Andrews’ 16th kill of the match sealed the win.
