Match One: No. 17 Augustana 3, Newman 0 (30-17, 30-20, 31-29)
MARYVILLE - Kati Newgard and Cayla Schroeder had 14 kills each to lead 17th-ranked Augustana (7-2) to a 3-0 sweep of Newman (0-12) in the opening match of the Northwest Missouri State Bearcat Classic. Scores went 30-17, 30-20 and 31-29.
Schroeder hit a match-high .545 (14-2-22) for the Vikings, who hit .300 as a team. Abbra Tallman had a match-high 15 kills and Jessica Hohn added 14 to lead Newman. The Jets outblocked the Vikings 7-6. Hohn had five blocks to lead all players.
Defensively, Jenna Logo had a match-high 15 digs and served three aces for Augustana. Katie Valliere had 14 digs for Newman. Renee Breckenridge served three of the Jets four aces.
Augustana controlled most of the first two games, but fell behind 18-12 in game three before rallying for the win. The Vikings fought off a game point with a kill by Ellen Andrews. Schroeder followed with her final kill of the match and an attack error by Newman led to the final point.
