Bearcat Classic Notes
Northwest Missouri State volleyball (4-4 / 0-0 MIAA) will host South Dakota in the Bearcat Classic to open its 2007 home schedule. The Bearcat Classic will accompany six teams, two from each of the following conferences: the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), the Heartland, and the North Central Conference (NCC). All matches will be played on the main court in Bearcat Arena.
Northwest mirrored its performance at the St. Edward's (Texas) Classic to its opening tournament, winning two and losing two in the exact same order. The Bearcats opened with a 3-0 blanking of Arkansas-Monticello, before dropping a 3-2 decision to Nova Southeastern (Fla.). The second day was nearly identical, winning its first match versus Southeastern 3-0, but could not win a game against host St. Edward's.
As a team, Northwest had double-digit aces in all but one game at the St. Edward's Classic. Freshman Paige Spangenberg leads the Cats in digs with 132, a 4.55 average per game. The Bearcats are out-hitting their opponents .206 to .153, with nearly 30 less attack errors. Sophomore Alicia Johnson garnered All-Tournament team at the St. Edward's Classic
The South Dakota Coyotes (9-0, 0-0 NCC) have won nine straight matches to start their 2007 season. South Dakota has defeated three MIAA opponents in Missouri Western, Fort Hays State and Emporia State. Northwest leads the series 11-2, with a perfect 7-0 home record.
The Newman Jets (0-10, Heartland 0-0) have won just six games in their ten loses, getting swept five times. Seven upperclassmen lead Newman University. The Jets competed in the Arkansas Tech Tournament, before traveling to St. Joseph, Mo. for the Missouri Western Tournament. Jessica Hohn was honored with all-tournament team in both Classics. It will be the first meeting between Newman and Northwest.
The Texas A&M International Dustdevils (0-2, Heartland 0-0) just opened play over the Labor Day weekend getting swept in both matches. Texas A&M International don just nine players in uniform, with just one senior on the roster. In 2006, the Dustdevils finished 24-5 but return just five players. It will be the first meeting between the Dustdevils and Bearcats.
The Augustana (S.D.) Vikings (6-2, 0-0 NCC) two losses have come to nationally ranked opponents in No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth and No. 19 Washburn. Lisa Hoegh dishes out 11.14 assists per game, totaling 312 in eight matches. Kati Newgard, Cayla Schroeder and Ellen Andrews all average over three kills per game, led by Andrews 3.79 average. As a team, the Vikings hit .192 at the net.
Looking ahead to next week, Northwest opens conference play against Southwest Baptist on Wednesday, Sept 12 at 7 pm. Home matches continue into the weekend as two nationally ranked opponents, No. 7 Truman and No. 5 Florida Southern, travel to Maryville
