St. Edward's (Texas) Match Notes

(match notes) Northwest Missouri State volleyball (2-2 / 0-0 MIAA) won its season opener against Montevallo 3-1 before dropping the next match 0-3 to tournament host Nebraska-Kearney. On Saturday, the Bearcats did the same winning its opening match 3-0 over St. Martins (Wash.) and dropping its final tournament match to Northern State (S.D.) 2-3.

The Bearcats will travel to another tournament Labor Day weekend at the St. Edward's Classic. It will be the first ever meeting between the Bearcats and all four teams they compete against at the St. Edward's Classic.

Northwest hit .193 at the net compared to the opponent's .163 at Nebraska-Kearney. Katie Swenson averaged 11.20 assists per game, totaling 168 throughout the weekend. Five players averaged over two kills per game, led by Rachel Nisi's three per game. Amy Bohnker stopped the opponents attacks with 9 total blocks (three solo and 12 assists). Freshman setter Katie Swenson and Junior middle hitter Amy Bohnker nabbed All-Tournament team at Nebraska-Kearney for their performances.

Northwest will be hosting its first home classic since 1994, featuring two teams from the MIAA (Northwest and Southwest Baptist), North Central Conference (South Dakota and Augustana (S.D.) and Heartland Conference (Texas A&M-International and Newman (Kan.)). The Bearcats have scheduled 16 matches at home, the most since 15 matches in 1985. The Sept. 19 match vs. Nebraska-Omaha will be the last non-conference match between the schools, as UNO will become a MIAA member for the 2008 season.

The Cotton Blossoms finished second place at the St. Mary's (Texas) MedClinic Invitational losing their only game to MIAA powerhouse Central Missouri ... Arkansas-Monticello beat Cameron (3-0), St. Mary's (3-1) and Indiana-Penn (3-2) before dropping the championship match ... The Cotton Blossoms hits .158 at the net, led by Melton Kameshia with 3.60 kills per game.

Nova Southeastern hosted a season opening tournament winning both matches on Friday and losing both matches on Saturday ... One of the matches dropped by the Sharks was to nationally ranked (No. 14) Washburn 3-0 ... Defensivley, the Sharks opponents hit .237 at the net ... Valentina Petrova does everything for the Sharks averaging 10.00 assists per game and 1.47 kills per game ... Seven upperclassmen (seven juniors and two seniors) are complimented by six underclassmen (four sophomores and two freshman).

The Savage Storm won the bookend's of a three match tournament at the Texocoma Challenge in Durant, Okla. ... Southeastern opened with a 3-0 blanking of Wiley College and won the final match 3-1 over Texas A&M Commerce ... Henderson State was the only team to give the Savage Storm a loss, beating them 3-0 ... In the three matches, the Storm hit .237 as a team led by Destiny Brown's impressive 4.40 kills per game ... Jordan Parks hit .390 at the net while posting 3.10 kills per game and Lindsay Ellisor dropped in 12.70 assists per game.

Twelve of the thirteen players call Texas home on the 2007 Hilltopper roster ... The Hilltoppers lost their season opener 3-0 to Wayne State, before realing off three straight victories ... In the three wins, St. Edwards lost just two games ... Lindsay Douglas had 62 kills in four matches, good for a 4.43 kills per game average ... As a team, the Hilltoppers hit .220 at the net.
