OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association volleyball coaches have selected the 2006 MIAA West Division-winning Washburn Lady Blues as the team for 2007.

WU edged defending conference champion Truman in the balloting, 77-73. The Lady Blues had six of a possible nine first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own school), while the Bulldogs picked up three top tallies.

Washburn has six starters back from last season, led by a pair of all-region choices from last year -- senior MHs Tessa Jones and Mandi Cox. Truman has to replace the MIAA's last two Most Valuable Player selections, but returns all-region junior MH Allie Cherven.

Central Missouri, an NCAA Division II regional finalist last season, was picked third in the poll, two points ahead of Pittsburg State. The Gorillas picked up the last available first-place vote.

Both UCM and PSU have six starters back from last season -- each needing to only replace their primary libero from 2006.

Northwest Missouri State was two points ahead of Emporia State for fifth place, 44-42. Missouri Southern checked in at No. 7 with 37 points.

Missouri Western, with former Oakland City (Ind.) head coach Tiffany Mastin now at the controls, was eighth in the survey with 22 points.

Fort Hays State placed ninth with 17 points, three ahead of Southwest Baptist -- the other MIAA squad with a new coach as Kelly Richardson takes over the Lady Bearcats. SBU ended a 55-match MIAA losing streak in 2006.

Once again this season, the top four teams in each division will advance to the MIAA Postseason Tournament. First-round matches will be hosted by the top two seeds in each division on Nov. 6.

The last two rounds will be hosted by the highest remaining East Division seed starting Nov. 9, with the finals the next day.
