Northwest Loses at Rival Missouri Western
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - (2-3 L) Northwest Missouri State volleyball lost a five game match to rival Missouri Western 2-3. The Bearcats lost a close game one 30-27, but won game two by the same score. Game three was all Griffons allowing only 21 points to Northwest. In game four, Nortwest forced a game five with a 31-29 win, but lost in that game five 15-8. The superb serving of the Griffons hurt Northwest as they had 11 total aces. With the win the Griffons sweep the season series with the Bearcats for the first time since 2003.
Senior Allison Hyland led the Bearcats at the net with 20 kills, which also set a new career high. Three other Bearcats chipped in at least 12 kills as senior Sarah Trowbridge recorded 19. Senior Molly Hankins dished out nearly all the assists with 64. She is now 111 assists away from breaking the single season record held by Abby Willms. Senior MacKenzie Heston and junior Katie Stilwell paced the defensive effort as Heston stopped the Griffons at the net with seven blocks and Stilwell kept the ball off the floor with 20 digs.
The Griffons used a large offensive attack as five players had double digits kills. Ashley Blickenstaff led the offense with 23 kills and a .512 (23-2-41) hitting percentage. Melissa Malone aided the defense and offense with 26 digs and 14 kills.
Northwest now sits 14-17 overall and 4-8 in the MIAA. The loss sets the Bearcats with the #4 seed in the MIAA Tournament which begins Tuesday, Oct. 31. They will matchup with #1 seed from the MIAA West, which will likely be #18 Washburn.
