Bearcats Takes Down Another Ranked Opponent
KANSAS CITY , Mo. - (3-2 W) Northwest Missouri State volleyball took down its second ranked opponent within a week beating #17 Rockhurst 3-2. The Hawks won the first and third games 30-20 and 30-28, while the Bearcats won games two and four by the same score of 30-23. In game five, Northwest won 18-16 for the first extra point game five since its loss to Henderson State 21-19 in 2000. The Bearcats won point 17 on a Rockhurst error and closed out the Hawks with a Priscilla Bremer kill.
Senior Molly Hankins broke a school record with 78 assists in the upset win. The previous record holder of overall match assists, Jennifer Pittrich, recorded 77 assists in 1993. Senior MacKenzie Heston paced the offensive with 22 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Fellow classmate Sarah Trowbridge and Freshman Priscilla Bremer complimented Heston with 20 and 19 kills, respectively. Trowbridge led five Bearcats that recorded at least 11 digs with 24 on the defensive end. Sophomore Amy Bohnker had seven blocks to aid the Bearcats at the net.
Rockhursts assist leader Amanda Hydorn recorded 70 and added 15 digs. Nathalia Rivera topped the kills list with 21 and chipped in 21 digs defensively. The defense was guided by Mandi Wolf who led both teams in digs with 32.
Northwest sits 14-16 (4-7 MIAA) after the win. The Bearcats have won two of their last three matches all against ranked opponents.
With two matches remaining in the Bearcats schedule, coach Anna Tool says, "We are peaking at the right time." Northwest travels to Missouri Western on Friday, Oct. 27 for a 7 p.m. match before closing out the season on the road at Truman State on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.
