Bearcats upset #16 Washburn
MARYVILLE, Mo. - (3-1 W) Northwest Missouri State volleyball team knocked off #16 Washburn 3-1 for the biggest upset in Coach Anna Tools first season. In game one, Washburn came out strong and hit .400 at the net while holding the Bearcats to a .136 hitting percentage. The rest of the match was all Bearcats hitting over .340 in each of the next three games. Washburn did not hit over .130 after game one and committed 17 errors in the last three games. In game two, Northwest broke a 7-7 tie with a 8-0 run aided by freshman Priscilla Bremer who recorded three kills. The 15 points allowed by Northwest in game two was the lowest ever allowed to Washburn since rally scoring was issued in 2001.
Freshman Pricilla Bremer played the best match of her young career recording career and match highs in kills with 24 and attack percentage hitting .600. Her attack percentage tied for second all-time in a four game match. Senior Molly Hankins also came to play as she tied her career high in assists with 65. Three other Bearcats recorded at least 13 kills, with senior MacKenzie Heston behind Bremer with 17. Heston also had seven total blocks to lead both teams. Junior libero Nicole Wojtowicz paced the defense with 21 digs, complimented by senior Sarah Trowbridge who had 19.
Washburn was led by Tessa Jones at the net with 14 kills and Erica Cowhick on defense with 30 digs. Kate Hampson dished out 40 assists topping the Lady Blues charts.
The win broke a 11-match losing streak to Washburn. The last time the Bearcats defeated the Lady Blues was Oct. 10, 2001 in Maryville. It is the first ranked opponent Northwest beat this year.
Northwest moves to 13-15 overall (4-6 MIAA) and clinches a berth in the MIAA tournament with the upset win.
The Bearcats host another ranked MIAA opponent when #11 Central Missouri comes to Bearcat Arena on Saturday, Oct. 21 for a 5 p.m. match.
