Northwest Takes First Two at Henderson State
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - (3-0 W) (3-2 W) Northwest Missouri State took both matches today in the opening day of the Henderson State Volleyball Tournament. Arkansas Tech was the Bearcats fist victim, while the host Henderson State had to wait for their demise until 2:30 p.m.
Northwest defeated Arkansas Tech 3-0 in the opening match of the Henderson State Volleyball Tournament. All games were within in 6 points with scores of 30-26, 30-24, and 30-26. A team hitting percentage of .328, a season high, aided the Bearcats to victory.
Senior Sarah Trowbridge topped the kills chart with 22, recording 13 in game one. Senior Allison Hyland recorded a career high hitting percentage of .611 killing 11 of 18 attempts at the net, a perfect 7 for 7 in game three. Senior Molly Hankins topped the assists charts as usual dishing out 42 and moving into the top ten for assists in a season.
In the second match of the day, against host Henderson State, the Bearcats battled to a 3-2 win. Game one consisted of 30-17 lopsided loss for the Bearcats. In games two and three an entire different picture was painted as the Bearcats won 30-27 and 30-17. Game four was back and forth with seven tied scores as Henderson State forced a game five winning 30-26. In the fifth and deciding game it was all Bearcats scorching the Lady Reddies 15-3.
A trio of seniors led the offensive attack for the Bearcats. Sarah Trowbridge led the Bearcats in kills for the fourth straight match with 18, while MacKenzie Heston and Allison Hyland pitched in 17 apiece for a total of 52 of the teams 68 total kills. Heston Moved into fourth all-time on the kills chart with after the match. She sits with 1,337 passing Nancy Pfeifler, who recorded 1,321 in her Bearcat days. Senior Molly Hankins dished out 61 assists to lead both teams. It is the second time this season she has topped 60 assists. Hankins also moved into eighth for season assists and needs only three more for sole possession of seventh.
The Bearcats consecutive wins are the first since Sept. 1at the Missouri Western Tournament when they defeated Colorado Christian and Alambam-Huntsville. Northwest is now 7-3 in tournaments this season.
Northwest is 11-14 overall (3-6 MIAA) after today's action.
The Bearcats take on West Florida and #19 North Alabama tomorrow to wrap up the Henderson State Tournament. The West Florida match begins at 1 p.m. with the #19 North Alabama match opening serve starting at 5 p.m.
