Bearcats Falls to Western 3-1
MARYVILLE, Mo. - (3-1 L) The Bearcats commited 33 attack errors and 12 service errors in a 3-1 loss to Missouri Western. Northwest spilt to first two games with Western 24-30 and 30-28 before dropping games three and four by the same score of 30-26. The Bearcats could not get back in game three as they led only once, but battled in game four. Game four was tied 23-23 when Western closed out Northwest with a 7-3 run.
A bright spot for the Bearcats was senior Molly Hankins who recorded 65 assists. Not only was it an individual career high for Hankins but also tied for fourth all-time on assists for a four game match. Senior MacKenzie Heston led the Bearcats in kills with 26 and had an impressive hitting percentage of .356 (26-59). Heston and senior Sarah Trowbridge each recorded double doubles. Trowbridge had 24 kills with 13 digs while Heston chipped in 24 digs to compliment her 26 kills. Junior Katie Stilwell added another 20 digs to help out the defense.
Western was led by a group of players on offense. Senior Melissa Malone led the way with 16 kills but three other Griffons had at least 10. Senior Ashley Blickenstaff had eight blocks to lead the way defensively. Freshman Shari Tompkins recorded 23 digs, which led the Griffons.
Northwest will travel to Kansas this weekend to take on Emporia State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. and Washburn Saturday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.
