Bearcats Nearly Come Back against #4 Truman State
MARYVILLE, Mo. - (3-2 L) Northwest nearly pulled off an incredible comeback tonight in its home opener against #4 Truman State. Truman State won the first two games 30-22 and 30-17 before the Bearcats came back strong in games four and five winning both 30-25. A true seesaw game four saw a 13-1 run by Truman followed by a 17-4 run by Northwest. The fifth and deciding game was tied 8-8 when Truman closed out the match with a 7-2 run to win 15-10. Truman goes to 12-2 (2-0 MIAA), while Northwest loses its fourth match in a row dropping to 6-7 (1-1 MIAA). Truman extends a 13 match winning streak against Northwest.
Northwest had a complete team effort with five Bearcats recording at least 13 digs. Northwest was led by senior Sarah Trowbridge and junior Katie Stilwell who recorded 28 and 21 digs respectively. The 28 digs by Trowbridge tied for seventh in digs in a five match. Furthermore, four Bearcats recorded at least 10 kills led by senior Allison Hyland's 14 kills. Senior Molly Hankins again led the Bearcats with 49 assists. The teams total attacks of 216 was tenth highest in a five game match and the 36 block assists ranked second all-time in Bearcat volleyball history. Hyland's 10 block assists ranks fifth all-time in five game match while the teams 19 total blocks tied for 8th in overall matches.
Truman State was led by Eli Medina, who recorded 14 kills and 19 digs, and Sarah Sherman, who recorded 13 kills and 24 digs. Truman exceeded Northwest total attacks recording 223.
The Bearcats will travel to Central Missouri State this weekend for a two match set on Saturday, Sept. 16th. Northwest takes on Central Missouri at 11:00 a.m. followed by Missouri-St. Louis at 1:30 p.m.
