Northwest Falls to No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota State, Mankato
TOPEKA, Kan. - (L 0-3 vs. UMD) (L 0-3 vs. MSU-M) Northwest Missouri State volleyball fell in three games to No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota State, Mankato, in the second day of the Washburn Classic. The Bearcats fall to 6-6 on the season, while Minnesota-Duluth improves to 11-2, and Minnesota State improves to 9-3.
Northwest began game two with a 4-0 start from the serving of junior Nicole Wojtowicz. Wojtowicz led all players with four aces, including one in the start of the second game. Three attack errors by Minnesota-Duluth in the third game provided Northwest a 5-0 run to pull within two points. Three consecutive kills later from Rachel Langseth put Duluth up 25-16 to close the match. The Bearcats fell by scores of 23-30, 28-30, 19-30.
Nine receptions throughout three games provided the momentum for Minnesota State, Mankato to defeat Northwest 23-30, 28-30, 27-30. Minnesota State got on top in game one, using three runs of six or more unanswered points to lead 15-24. A 6-0 run from Northwest allowed the Bearcats to move within 23-28, before a kill and service ace from Mankato ended game one.
Wojtowicz provided the spark with two service aces to pull Northwest to 26-28 in the second game. Senior MacKenzie Heston also contributed two kills in the Bearcats 6-0 run in the final points of game two. Northwest tallied 19 kills in the third game, its highest output at the Washburn Classic. Senior Allison Hyland led the Bearcats with a .300 attack percentage in game three.
Northwest will open their 2006 home season against defending MIAA tournament champion Truman State on Tues., Sept. 12. The match is slated to being at 7:00 p.m.
