Bearcats Drop First Match at Washburn Classic
TOPEKA, Kan. -- (2-3 L) Northwest Missouri State volleyball could not hold on after taking Game 1 as Augustana (S.D.) came back to gain a 3-2 win tonight at the Washburn Classic. Scores were 21-30, 30-24, 30-28, 26-30, 15-12. Northwest falls to 6-4 overall while Augustana improves to 3-6.
After dropping two close games and trailing 2-1 in the match, Northwest took Game 4 thanks to the serving of junior Katie Stilwell (West Des Moines, Iowa). Tied at 5-5, Stilwell served during six straight points garnering three service aces during the streak. Augie climbed back to a 27-24 count, but senior Allison Hyland (Omaha, Neb.) finished the Vikings off with a kill and sent the match to Game 5.
The Bearcats took the first point of Game 5 but Augustana rattled off six of the next seven points and took control from there. Senior MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) totaled a team season-best 25 kills to go along with 14 digs. Hyland finished with 18 kills. Two players ended with 20 digs apiece, senior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa) and Stilwell. Senior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) had 52 assists, the second-highest total in 2006.
Andrea Oswald was the leading Viking hitter with 22 kills and a .288 hitting mark. Setter Jenna Lago came away with 56 assists.
Northwest continues Day 2 of action at the Washburn Classic taking on Minnesota-Duluth at 9 a.m. and finishing with Minnesota State, Mankato at 3 p.m.
