Bearcats split in season opening tournament
JOPLIN, Mo -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team opened its season today (Friday) in Joplin, Mo., at the 2006 Missouri Southern Invitational. The host, Missouri Southern, beat Northwest 3-1 in its opening match. Northwest won the first game 30-18 before dropping three consecutive games to the Lions. Senior MacKenzie Heston led the Bearcats with 17 kills while senior Sarah Trowbridge chipped in with 15. Five Northwest players recorded at least 10 digs as junior Katie Stilwell led the team with 15. Ashley Hill of Missouri Southern led the Lions with 17 kills.
Northwest rebounded in their 7 p.m. contest sweeping Colorado State-Pueblo and giving newcomer coach, Anna Tool, her first career Bearcat victory. Trowbridge exceeded her first match kills with 18 while redshirt freshman Ashley Mitchell added 11. Senior Molly Hankins provided a large majority of the assists with 88 total in both matches.
Northwest continues play tomorrow opening at 10 a.m. against Minnesota State-Moorhead and ending with University of Mary at 3 p.m.
