OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association volleyball coaches have selected 2005 NCAA Division II national quarterfinalist Truman State University as the favorite to win the conference title for the upcoming season.
The Bulldogs, 2005 MIAA Tournament champions edged last season's regular season champ Washburn for the honors, getting six of a possible nine first-place votes (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team) and 78 points. The Lady Blues picked up the remaining four first-place votes with 76 points.
The other two MIAA schools which competed in the South Central Regional last season -- Central Missouri State (65 points) and Emporia State (50 points) -- came in third and fourth. Pittsburg State was fifth, just two points behind ESU.
The second half of the list has Missouri Southern in sixth with 37 points, followed by Missouri Western with 33 points. The Griffons will have a new coach, as former assistant Kyprian Harasymowycz steps in this season for the retired Cindy Brauck.
Conference newcomer Fort Hays State was eighth in the poll with 26 points, three points ahead of Northwest Missouri State -- which has Anna Tool taking over as head coach. Southwest Baptist rounds out the list.
The conference will be divided into divisions this season. Central Missouri State, Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri State, Southwest Baptist and Truman will be in the East Division. The West includes Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Missouri Southern, Pittsburg State and Washburn.
The top four teams in each division will advance to the MIAA Postseason Tournament. First-round matches will be hosted by the top two seeds in each division on Oct. 31.
The last two rounds will be hosted by the highest remaining West Division seed starting Nov. 3, with the finals the next day.
