Steph Suntken Announced as Assistant Volleyball Coach

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State volleyball program and head coach Anna Tool have announced the hiring of Steph Suntken to the position of Assistant Volleyball Coach. Suntken, who was a two-year varsity letter winner at Northwest (2003-04), takes over for Andrea King who is leaving for personal reasons.

"I am looking forward to having Steph join my coaching staff," said Tool, who became the coach on Jan. 12. "She was a quality player and will be an asset to our volleyball program. Steph is very organized and quick to learn - she'll make a strong transition to college coaching."

In 2005, Suntken was the Maryville High School Head Volleyball Coach. Suntken is completing her Master of Science degree in athletic administration at Northwest with expected completion in May.

"Anytime you can come back where you played, it is pretty special," said Suntken. "With just with one player graduating last season, there is a great core group of athletes coming back in 2006. I am excited to work with coach Tool because the program is headed in the right direction with her knowledge of the game and the players here."

During her Bearcat career, Suntken earned Honorable Mention All-Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) honors as a senior. The Indianola, Iowa native was second on the 2004 team in blocks (107) and fourth in kills per game (2.55). She finished her Northwest career fourth on the block assists per game list with 0.71 and seventh on the total blocks per game charts with 0.92. She was a team captain as a senior and was mentioned to the Academic All-MIAA Team.

Suntken has Division I playing experience having spent the 2000-01 seasons at Iowa State. As a track athlete at Northwest, Suntken was crowned champion in the 800-meters.

Suntken will begin her duties officially on August 1.
