Volleyball Wins Both matches, but Eliminated From Post Season

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball did its part for the last spot in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament, by beating Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern. However, Pittsburg State won on Friday night eliminate the Bearcats from post season contention.

On Friday against Southwest Baptist, Northwest was able to win games one, three and five. In the game one victory the green Bearcats won by 12, 30-18. In game three, Northwest was able to secure the victory with a 30-23 win, and in the final game the Bearcats won 15-10.

Northwest was able to block Southwest 12 times, with sophomore Lauren Cummings (Ankeny, Iowa) chipping in with a match high seven. Also, MacKenzie Heston (Ankeny, Iowa) ended the match with five blocks.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Bearcats were led by junior Sarah Trowbridge (Boone, Iowa), who a team high 14 kills and 18 digs. Trowbridge had her fourteenth double-double of the season.

After the win over the purple Bearcats, Northwest improved to 14-18 and 4-11 in the MIAA.

Today, the Bearcats had to stay on the road to play Missouri Southern and Northwest swept Southern, in three games (35-33, 30-17, 30-27)

Northwest was once again led by Cummings and Heston on the blocks with each of them coming with four and three respectively. Trowbridge also, had her fifteenth double-double of the campaign when she chipped in with 11 kills and 14 digs, both team highs.

The Bearcats setters combined on the weekend for 86 assists, with junior Molly Hankins (Moline, Ill.) leading the way with 47. Sophomore setter Katie Stilwell (W. Des Moines, Iowa) came in with 39 assists, which put her two away from tying for sixth place all-time at Northwest in career assists.

After both matches this weekend the Bearcats move to 15-18 overall and 5-11 in the MIAA. Northwest will have a match on Tuesday, Nov. 1 against South Dakota on the road, a team the Bearcats swept earlier this season.
